Objectives

One of our main objectives in the field of neuroanatomy is to understand the development and organization of the central nervous system of vertebrates, using lampreys as experimental model. We use immunohistochemistry, neural pathways tracers, neurogenesis studies and in situ hybridization. These studies are developed according to the segmental model of the brain of vertebrates, which greatly facilitates the comparison between different species when establishing homologies and uncovers the evolution of different brain structures in different species.

Currently we add stereological methods to obtain quantitative data from different brain regions, particularly the olfactory system. Furthermore, we extend the experimental field to other species, especially mice and human samples.

Research fields

a) Segmentary organization and development of the central nervous system of vertebrates.

b) Motor circuits.

c) Neuronal coonection pathways.

d) Organization and development of the olfactory system.
